Every now and then I just want to go wandering down roads I come to.
To imagine the lives that came before me. To see the landscape of the Creator’s imagination.
Good things have always come from driving country roads.
I admire homesteads and remaining chimneys…. wells dug by hand.
Traces of lives planted in outlined spaces where cabins once stood. Rocks making foundations where houses once stood. A rock lined path leading down a path in the field… yet no door or cabin remains.
A gorgeous heirloom rose blooms deep in the field, like a hidden jewel in its forest.
Flag irises gone rogue to make a small field of color in the woods, after someone long ago planted them from their mama’s mawmaw’s place. A flower vine still bravely blooming on an old fence post long after its family is gone. They make my heart smile.
I love how in my travels often a farmer waves as he goes by, and kindly,as I ask if I could take a picture of something or another I want to do at our place, a story will be shared of how it came to be. The land is shaped by such men, just as the creek shapes the rock over years of sharing space together. We become strangers sharing a sacred moment, often breaking new ground as friendly acquaintances.
The country roads travelled become the wealth of my days lately. Our cottage lacking in the comforts of home, but the roads remind me that home is where I am writing my own stories, and we’re building a new story in our hearts. My cottage is filled with those stories shared, now pieces of this vine or that bulb divided, planted in our yard too or hanging like a red flag reminded me that this is the dream we dreamed and it’s becoming…as we nurture it.
I share back captures of their world, unexpectedly they are brought or mailed back as a thank you… so privileged to have heard the stories shared of how their farm or place came to be.Reminders that nothing comes from nothing… we each bring to another and in the best of days… share our stories, our gifts, and our hopes…
There is so much life lived on country roads…
